Here is some basic information you should know about HDMI connections and version 1.3.

The article was written by Brian Ploskina published by Dealerscope magazine:

Definition: HDMI 1.3 is a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) trasmitting all-digital, uncompressed, audio and video.

Use HDMI in a sentence: “Today, I used HDMI 1.3 as an interface between my high definition DVD player and high-definition television, while I plan to upgrade the rest of my video sources, such as cable/satellite set-top box, PlayStation 3 and A/V receiver, when I purchase the appropriate cables.”

Benefits of HDMI: As a pure digital connection, HDMI offers vastly better signal quality and throughput over its analog counterparts, such as RCA. Also, by combining audio and video over a single cable, HDMI reduces the cable clutter that resulted from previous setups.

What’s wrong with DVI? The digital visual interface (DVI) was designed by PC manufacturers as a PC interface to deskop and LCD monitors. But it doesn’t carry sound, so it still requires an additional cable. HDMI is the only all-purpose, all-digital A/V connection, and by far the most widely accepted.

What does all this mean to me? HDMI enables new kinds of plug-and-play intelligence between devices, making your home theater operate like a home computer network. For instance, when you hit “Play” on the DVD remote, the intelligence programmed into HDMI will start the display and audio system, setting them to the appropriate levels, without you needing to do any more work than push that button.

What’s new with version 1.3? The new interface can transmit data up to 10Gbps, at up to 48-bit color depth. You could watch a fully high definition 1080p movie at 36-bit color performance.

Blow your customers away: A typical movie you see at the cineplex displays images at 24 frames per second (fps). HDMI 1.3’s massive bandwidth means your customers will see frame rates as high as 120fps—way beyond the capability of human experience. This makes HDMI 1.3 the must-have connection for anyone’s Blu-ray or HD DVD video player.

What your customers may not know: While they have not enacted it yet, the movie studios are threatening to down-convert Blu-ray and HD DVD movies to 540p for those viewing the film over analog connections. The capability to do so is built into every player manufactured. With HDMI, you’d never have to worry about this happening.

Some more important details about HDMI 1.3:

• It’s backwards compatible with all prior releases of the HDMI spec, as well as DVI-compliant devices.

• HDMI 1.3 incorporates ‘lip sync’ technology, which automatically syncs the audio and video. This resolves the problems other connection specs have had when the video takes longer to process than the audio, causing a delay, which seems to the viewer like they’re watching a poorly-dubbed Kung Fu release.

• HDMI 1.3 means viewers also hear lossless audio, including Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio.

• The spec includes next-generation “xvYCC” color space, which displays 1.8 times as many colors as the previous standard, including nearly every possible color the human eye can perceive.

• The new mini-connector allows customers to connect next-generation devices, such as HD camcorders.

DVIGEAR published a white paper for installers and consumers which will help you understand what HDMI 1.3 is, the differences between categories 1 and 2, and what some of the limitations of HDMI can be.

you can download it here: www.arkdvd.com/DVIGear_HDMI.pdf.
